This is to ensure all the animal waste has been decomposed properly.  It should smell like beautiful composted soil. This way you won't be putting your trowel into semi-decomposed doggie doos which could be really stinky.\n\nDepending on what sort of soil you have will depend on how long they need to rest. If you have really bad clay soil it can take longer whereas sandy soil is quicker as the contents leach away quicker. Of course, you don't need to empty them until they have filled up with soil which can take up to a year or more depending on your garden and how you rotate filling them. Once it is too full to put anymore waste in then you can let one rest to fully decompose, and then empty it.\n\nThe Black Recycled Compots are very slightly softer \u0026amp; weaker than the Green Compots.  The little tabs on the lid can potentially  break if you stand on them. I personally recommend getting the green ones if you are likely to put them in a place in the garden where people are likely to step. as they will last longer, can be recycled more times, and don't break if you stand on them. The new material makes them very similar in strength.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eCan the \u003cstrong\u003eRecycled Easy Compost Bins be recycled?\u003c\/strong\u003e\n\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nThey can be recycled once they start to fall apart but they can only be recycled a certain number of times as they get softer each time and eventually become unusable.  With care they could last up to ten years or more.    Some people believe recycled plastic is the better way to go.  And in many instances it is.  But with the Compot recycled is not always the best option as they could potentially break.  And if the material is not clean but instead \"Kerbside Waste\" then it could potentially leach chemicals into the soil.  However the current material beings used should not leach chemicals into the soil.\n\nIf you are using them in a raised garden bed and not likely to stand or sit on them, then the recycled pots are the way to go.   It is a personal choice and up to you in the end.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eHow many do I need?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nAs a general rule of thumb, I suggest one Compot per person and one for the garden.   Add one or two more if you have pets depending on whether you have a small or large animal and a small or large amount of animal waste.\n\nAdd an extra one per person if you are vegetarian.  Because, even though your waste will disappear in one to two weeks if it is full of vegan waste, I have found that vegetarians eat twice as much food as non-vegetarians so they need more space.   And they also eat less processed food, so again need more space.\n\nI always say to start with a minimum amount and see how you go.  Then get more if you need more.  And if you use the \u003ca href=\"\/pages\/super-fast-composting-above-ground-with-a-compot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"\u003e\"Above Ground Method\"\u003c\/a\u003e to compost some of your waste, you will find you may not need more, as the above ground method is super fast and works like having two in the garden so you get twice the space with just one pot.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eHow long should I let dog waste rest before using?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nIt is preferable to let the animal waste decomposed properly before you spread it around your garden.   This means letting one sit unattended for 4 to 6 weeks. If you were making a garden seat out of recycled plastic it would not matter.  But something that is being used to nourish your veggies is another matter.  Around ornamental plants, it should not be an issue. If you are not sure then go for the green serious gardener pack as the green ones will not leach chemicals into the soil.  And you can stand on them and they won’t break. I know for myself I often forget to avoid them in the garden.\n\nBut it is up to the individual. Only you can know how careful you are in your garden and what your needs are.\n\nThey are perfect for raised garden beds or above ground composting because you are not likely to stand on them.\n\n\u003ch2\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHow Many Recycled Clever Compost Bins do I need?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nAs a general rule of thumb, I suggest one Compot per person and one for the garden. Though vegetarians often need two per person and two for the garden because they seem to have more fresh waste. Just hose over the pot while you water and let the water seep inside your pots. You can always remove the lid to check if they are moist enough. This should provide enough wastewater to keep the contents moist and keep the bugs happy.\n\nIf you don't have Soldier Flies in your area then you definitely need to keep the contents moist or it is too hard for the worms to eat either. And you will have to fill your pots up with worm friendly waste only. If it looks like it has dried out too much and has not decomposed then put the nozzle of your hose into the contents and give them a good swirl around with the water. Best to use an old nozzle if you have a lot of animal waste as it could stink up the end of your hose. But don't do this unless it looks like nothing is happening and it looks dried out.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eCombining Kitchen Waste and Animal Waste\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nCombining your kitchen waste with your pet waste seems to keep the Soldier flies happier. It gives them more variety of food to eat but is not necessary if you don't want to do this. Because you have added your doggie doo to the mix, it will keep most dogs away as they don't usually like the smell of their own poop.  But this will not work if your dog eats his own poop.  There is really no right or wrong way to do it, just some ways work better.\n\nA little experimentation with different ways to do it will help you work out how you like to do it and what works best in your garden. Otherwise, just keep topping them up and let them look after themselves. Give the pot a jiggle back and forth to loosen it in the soil or twist it around in the ground to free it from the soil. Now you simply ease it out of the hole and...Viola!  It is free. Empty the contents back into the hole, fill up excess with soil from your garden, and your done. Then give your pots a good clean out with water and they are ready for transport to your next address. Or you might just be moving them to another spot in the garden.\n\nIf they seem really compacted in the hole you may need to do a little digging around the top of the pot in order to free it up. If there is an odour you need to call me so I can work out what needs tweaking in your process. Most likely it is your soil that is the problem and perhaps needs some minor adjustments on how the Compot will work in your kind of soil. Covering your pots will filter any odours (which you can't smell) that might attract house flies. The last thing you want is to be breeding up house flies in your small courtyard. So if you don't have leaves or grass clippings then try hay, lucern mulch, pea straw, or my favourite \"shredded bamboo\" (which is costly) which allows water into your garden but stops evaporation. And if you have bad soil worms will take the shredded bamboo deep down into the soil at the base of you pot. Thus improving your soil as time goes by.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWhat is a good ground cover?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nA good ground cover is leaves, shredded bamboo, and grass clippings if you have any. Otherwise hay, straw, light mulches, pea straw, lucern mulch or anything except dirt and sugar cane mulch. Grass clippings are my favorite because they are the cheapest and provide a great cover for your soil. Just spread the covering all around your garden a couple of inches thick. Not too thick because you want it to break down quickly and not burn any of your plants. Put irrigation pipe below the grass clipping to prevent evaporation and help keep the grass clipping moist for the worms. This also counters the issue of grass matting together and becoming hydrophobic. It will turn into beautiful soil directly on your garden bed with out any hard work involved. Fill with all your kitchen waste. Lock on lid, cover with your desired garden cover and forget. Then refill, when ever you are ready, with more waste.\n\nYou do not need to wait for everything to disappear. Just keep topping them up till you can't top them up anymore. Allow them to rest for a few weeks now and when full of composted soil simply scoop out the soil and start to refill again.
