Or simply use it to compliment the current composting system you are using.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWhat can I compost?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nYou can compost all the usual worm friendly waste.  \u003cstrong\u003ePLUS \u003c\/strong\u003emeat, citrus, onions, oil, dairy, eggs, coffee, tea bags, prawns, fish, crab and animal waste.  Not to mention, oysters, bones, paper towel you might wipe a frying pan out with, and anything  that you produce in the kitchen.  Except of course for plastic, glass, aluminium, or metal containers of any kind.\n\nLiterally anything biodegradable. Though bones, crab shells, and oyster shells won't actually decompose. But any remaining food remnants left on shells or bones, will be eaten leaving behind a clean item.\n\nIf you are really keen you can remove these items when ready, dry them, crush them and put them back on your garden as a calcium source of food for your plants.  Or simply toss them in your bin.  They will smell like beautiful composted soil and not smelly fish or meat waste.  So they don't stink out your council bin.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eCan I compost paper?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nThere is nothing stopping you from putting paper or cardboard in your pot.   But I think this is a waste of good food composting space, and it takes a long time to decompose.   Worms are better at disposing of paper and cardboard.\n\nI prefer to use the \"\u003ca href=\"\/pages\/super-fast-composting-above-ground-with-a-compot\"\u003eAbove Ground Method\u003c\/a\u003e\" for composting my paper and cardboard waste.  Paper, carboard and green garden waste are better composted in bay or tumbler systems if you have very large quantities of these materials.   However you can compost green garden waste inside the Compot as long as it is not too fibrous.  Fibrous waste is better disposed of using the above ground method.  But different types of green waste will decompose differently.\n\nI have tried exterminating some Wandering Dew and it works a treat because this plant is not very fibrous and turns to water and waste very quickly.  So you would need to try different things in your garden to see what works best.   I personally think it is a waste of good food composting space.  Of course it all depends how many you have scattered around your garden.\n\nIn the end it is your choice what you prefer to do.   You can send your paper and cardboard off to council tips for large compost companies to utilise if that is easier for you. And green waste if you have a council green waste bin.  At least the cardboard and paper or green waste won't stink out your council bin.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWhat makes it work?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nThe Compot works with roughly 6 different elements - the main one and most important are the \u003ca href=\"\/pages\/life-cycle-of-a-black-soldier-fly\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSoldier Flies\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e. These amazing little bugs will devour anything and everything you throw at them. \u003ca href=\"\/pages\/composting-black-soldier-flies\"\u003eComposting with Black Soldier Flies\u003c\/a\u003e\n\nIf you live in a climate that it either too hot or too cold for the Soldier Fly to survive you can still compost with the eco-eze compot composter because there are ground critters, worms, bacteria and all kinds of invisible things that make your Compots work.  So it will still work but it will be much slower. In some instances you would get better results using the \u003ca href=\"\/pages\/super-fast-composting-above-ground-with-a-compot\"\u003eAbove Ground Method.\u003c\/a\u003e   It all depends on your climate, your environment and your particular circumstances.\n\n\u003ch3\u003eSo where do the worms live?\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\nThe worms with this system live outside the pot in the surrounding soil.   Here they get all the left over morsels leached off the food as the Soldier Fly Larvae devour your waste.   The worms will come into the pot if the Soldier Flies have vacated by pupating to become more Soldier Flies.\n\nSometimes you will find the worms and Soldier Flies in there together but only if the Soldier Fly Larvae are in small numbers. The rest of the elements all do their bit as they all work separately or in unison to compost your waste.   If one element is not available (eg Soldier Fly Larvae) then the other elements will still do the work.   It is just a matter of working out how best to use the eco-eze composter in your garden and whether you put it in the ground or above ground.\n\n\u003ch3\u003eThis can create varying degrees of decomposition depending on...\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003col\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eThe weather.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eYour soil type.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eThe time of year.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eBugs \u0026amp; Bacteria in your soil.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eHow moist the contents are.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eThe microclimate in your garden.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eDo you water your plants regularly.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eAre you soaking your scraps and for how long.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eWhat are you using as a cover on your Compot Lid.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eIs the inside environment keeping your bugs happy.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\n\nIt’s super easy to keep your bugs happy, and I never worry about any of the above things.  I just fill, forget, refill and cover with my grass clippings and leaves.  Don't make it a chore.  It is meant to be easy - eco-eze.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eHow do I keep them happy?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nIdeally, when you lock on the \u003cstrong\u003ereversible lid\u003c\/strong\u003e it is preferable to cover the lid with whatever you use in your garden bed to keep the moisture in your soil. This might be...\n\n\u003col\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eGrass clippings and leaves (my favourite)\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eHay\/Straw\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eLucerne\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003ePea Straw\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eJust leaves\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eCoconut fiber (not coir)\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eSmall fibrous green waste\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eMulch if it is not full of too much soil\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eWeeds if you are not worried about how it looks.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eAnd my all time favourite....Shredded Bamboo - but this costs money.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\n\nCovering the lid with whatever you are using in your garden to keep the moisture in your soil will be more than adequate.   This keeps the hot air out in summer and the cold air out in winter so your waste decomposes rather than dehydrates.   Nothing can easily decompose dry waste so keep your lids covered and your contents wet.   It will disappear eventually over time if left uncovered and becomes dry, but it takes a long time depending on what you filled your pot with.\n\nIt also keeps the light out as most garden critters who live in your soil prefer the dark.  You don’t have to cover your pots.  But you will find it works more efficiently, breaks down quicker, and the contents stay nice and moist.  In the end it is up to you.  Try both ways and see for yourself which works better in your garden.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWhat not to cover your pots with?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nThe general rule is cover your pots with anything but \u003cstrong\u003edirt\u003c\/strong\u003e as it needs to breathe, and \u003cstrong\u003eno sugar cane mulch\u003c\/strong\u003e as this emits a sweet smell of molasses which appears to attract rats. This won't happen if every garden. But if you already have a rat problem in your neighbourhood, then don't use sugar cane mulch. I think it is better to mix the sugar cane mulch into your soil as you prepare your garden bed for planting. This way there is not the same strong smell of molasse being emitted into the air.\n\nIf you find sugar cane mulch works in your garden without any issues, then feel free to use it.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eHow fast will waste decompose?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nEven though this is a small compost bin it is incredibly efficient and you might be pleasantly surprised when you see how fast your waste disappears. It is super easy to fill with the wide opening so you don’t have to chop anything like you have to do to feed your worms. Naturally, some things you might need to chop up, like a cauliflower base - it all depends on what you eat. Fruit and Veg waste will be gone in one to two weeks max.  In many instances the pot will be completely empty. It all depends on the density of the food waste and how active the bugs are inside your pots.\n\nEverything else takes roughly 4 to 6 weeks and up to 10 weeks in winter.   That is still faster than most other compost systems. Results will vary of course depending on your particular circumstances and what food you eat.\n\nThe beauty of this system is you don’t need to wait for everything to decompose before you top it up. Just keep topping it up and it will keep disappearing into the soil and turn your trash into triumph in your garden without any real hard work from you. Another secret to fast waste disposal is soaking your scraps to ferment them. I now recommend you do this with all your waste all year round and not just in winter as shown in a very old video.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eHow do I ferment my waste?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nChoose a container to keep on your kitchen bench or under your sink with a lid that is airtight but easy to remove. You don't want to make this a chore. If the lid is hard to remove you won't do it. It needs to seal the container well so no bugs infiltrate your house or your waste collection container. Then simply collect all your kitchen scraps in this container and add \"Wastewater\". Allow your scraps to soak in this \"Wastewater\" for as long as you can tolerate so it gets stinky.\n\n\u003ch3\u003eTurn your stinky waste to sensational soil.\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\nAs a general rule this waste covered in water will not smell for roughly 3 to 5 days. Though some things go off quicker than others.  Like cat food - stinky stuff. If it gets to three days and you can't stand the smell, then empty it or add more waste water to dilute the odour. This buys you time till the weekend when you have time to empty it. Or you can add lots of citrus peel.  It will smell beautiful even when you toss it into your Compot.\n\nWork out what works best for you.  But the longer your waste soaks the quicker it will decompose.  Turn your stinky waste into sensational soil which is in fact called \"Frass\". Frass is the by-product (like worm castings) created from hundreds of Soldier Fly larvae devouring your waste. It is super rich so spread it around your garden and not just in one spot. Then water it in well like you would any other fertiliser or soil conditioner.\n\n\u003ch3\u003eWhy do I ferment my waste?\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\nIf you are using your Compots for worm friendly waste only you \u003cstrong\u003edo not\u003c\/strong\u003e need to ferment your waste. Worms don't like fermented waste.  A couple of days is ok but any more than that will get too much for the worms to tolerate as the waste becomes too acidic for them to manage.\n\nWhen you collect \u003cstrong\u003eALL your waste together\u003c\/strong\u003e, ideally you want to ferment this waste with \u003cstrong\u003ewastewater\u003c\/strong\u003e so it does several things.....\n\n\u003col\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eSoftens the waste.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eStarts the decomposition process\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eMakes it easier for bacteria and bugs to dispose of it.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eAttracts the Soldier Flies who will devour your waste quicker than worms\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eAllows you to fit 10 litres of waste into just one pot.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eHelps in winter when the bacteria, bugs and or Soldier Flies might be  hibernating\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eNourishes your garden when you toss it all in your Compot.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eDilutes and mingles all the odours and nutrients\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eProvides instant food for your plants - in solution\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eLast but not least....It keeps vermin away\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\n\nIf for what ever reason you find it does not keep the vermin away it probably means you are not soaking the waste long enough. Or you are using sugar cane mulch where rats are prevalent in that area. Thus, you might need to have a larger container in your laundry or shed where you can accumulate more than one bucket of waste and allow it to ferment for longer than a day. This to me is extra work and takes up extra space, so try soaking it overnight, empty it into your Compot and watch what occurs.\n\nIf nothing is trying to dig around your pots or chew threw your pots then you know this will work in your garden. But if you find those pesky rats or something else is trying to get into your pots then you know you need to soak the waste for a longer period of time. Just make sure you don't use a container that gets too heavy to carry.\n\nEvery critter in the garden is looking for food to eat and your waste can be an easy food source for these animals if you don't soak your waste. Fresh waste is easily smelt by animals in your garden.  That is not to say this won't work.  It all depends on your circumstances.  For instance - some people have great success in raised garden beds when using the eco-eze composter for just worms. You need to work out what you prefer to do and what works in your garden.\n\nOther options (coming soon)\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWhat is \"wastewater\"?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nWastewater is any water you are tossing down your kitchen drain that is going to waste.   It could be...\n\n\u003col\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eCooking water - eg. pea, pasta, rice, veggie water etc\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eWater from a container you rinsed out that is destined for your recycle bin.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eWashing up water - if you wash up by hand.  A little detergent is a good thing (video to come)\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eGrey water if you have a way to collect this easily\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003cli\u003eAny water you can save from being wasted down the drain\u003c\/li\u003e\n\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\n\nThe bad thing is - you will realise just how much water you waste when you start collecting it.   But don't stress.   No one is perfect.  If you fill your pot up with more water than waste this can only be a good thing as you are putting water back into your garden.  Work out what works for you.   If you still waste some down the drain that is ok too.   You can only save so much unless you have a grey water system.  Just do the best you can.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWhat happens if I get Soldier Flies in my worm farm?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nUsually, the Soldier Fly Larvae crowd out the worms in a worm farm if they are in large numbers.  The worms don't like the leachate produced by the Soldier Fly Larvae.   As worms are self regulating they will eat each other if there is no food for them to eat.  Some people manage to get the two working together in their worm farms.   But it does require management.\n\nWith the Compot system, the worms have somewhere to escape – the soil.  You never have to worry about your worms dying with this eco-eze compost solution if it gets too hot, or too cold, or you go away on holidays. The Soldier Flies is exactly what you want inside your Compot because they eat everything, and are super fast and efficient.  But in a worm farm they crowd out the worms.  You might find they fly out at you when you remove the lid as they can't get out otherwise.\n\nSoldier Fly Larvae are pretty stinky above ground as the leachate smells just like ammonia created in anaerobic conditions. There is no smell when in the ground and the Ammonia is instant food for you plants. If you live in the bush you could use a worm farm for Soldier Flies because no one will care about the odour. But in urban environments you have to consider your neighbours as they most likely won't approve of your composting methods.\n\nWith a Compot in the ground there is no smell.  If there is a small you need to call me so I can work out what you are doing and how to tweak your process.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eHow many pots do I need?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nIf you are a household of more than one person you will need more than one Compot.  A general rule of thumb is one per person and one for the garden.  That is a good starting point.   However, I find vegetarians often need two per person and two for the garden.  I think this is because they eat lots more fresh food and less processed food.\n\nThe eco-eze Compot composter actually works faster than larger compost bins which is why you don't always need a lot of them.   Depending on the amount of waste you produce you may never need anymore than one per person and one for the garden.  If you do need more you can always buy more.\n\nIdeally, you need to plant a few around your garden and rotate filling them.  By the time you get back to the first one, it will be well and truly ready to take more of your waste. The waste disappears into the surrounding soil so you don’t need to collect and spread soil as you do with traditional Compost Bins.  The worms will move around the garden from pot to pot and spread their castings as they go. So much less work for you.\n\nSome people choose to have lots of pots so they can nourish all their garden easily.  Other people get a few and move then around the garden every 6 moths or so. In the end it is up to you what will work best for you and your circumstances.  I only move mine if I am re-designing the garden.  Otherwise they stay in the same place forever.\n\nYour \u003cstrong\u003eawful waste will become awesome soil\u003c\/strong\u003e in less time than other compost systems.   If you waste does not turn to soil I give you your money back.  But you can't fail with this system. It is all just a matter of time and your waste will transform into beautiful soil, and transform your garden.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eCan I harvest soil?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nIf you want to collect and harvest soil you can. Just let one pot rest for 4 to 6 weeks without topping it up and it will turn into beautiful rich composted \"Frass\" that is easy to scoop out with your hand or a trowel. This occurs quicker than a traditional compost bin and is easy to collect.\n\nIf you don’t like filling the pots with \u003cstrong\u003eeverything\u003c\/strong\u003e from your kitchen \u003cstrong\u003eyou can choose\u003c\/strong\u003e to fill them with just \u003cstrong\u003eworm friendly food only\u003c\/strong\u003e, as you would in a worm farm. The worms will try to fill the pot up with soil back up to ground level.  You will get more soil this way but you will have to empty it more often as well.   Thus a little more work involved.\n\nWorms are great in raised garden beds if you really want to breed up worms and see them in action inside your pots.  The choice is yours and you will soon work out what’s best for your situation.  But remember that fresh waste can attract the wrong kind of garden critter.  If this happens then you need to follow my instructions and soak your waste in wastewater as seen in this video about composting in Winter.  \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/a75cXM8Icv0\"\u003eCompots in winter\u003c\/a\u003e I find that soaking your scraps in wastewater works well all year round and not just winter.\n\nRemember. ..Just... (coming)\n\n\u003ch2\u003eCan I put one in a Chicken pen?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nThe easy composter \u0026amp; propagator top often suits people with chickens.    That is because they usually give much of their waste to their chickens and have very little waste left over to compost.  But chickens don't always eat everything so what do you do with the rest of your waste?  Put it in an eco-eze Compot.  When the Soldier Flies come the chickens can feast on the larvae which are roughly 45% protein for them.\n\nChickens love Soldier Fly Larvae and maggots also. You are not likely to get maggots in the Compot but don't panic if you do.   If they happen to get inside the Compot they usually can't get out very easily.  If house flies are hovering around your pots in your garden then add a little extra cover.   Usually, this is enough to filter any odours they might be smelling.   You, of course, should not smell anything.\n\nIn a chicken pen you don't need to worry about covering the pot as chickens like flies as well.   And you don't need to soak your scraps when using the Compot inside a chicken pen.  I now teach people to use the \"\u003ca href=\"\/pages\/super-fast-composting-above-ground-with-a-compot\"\u003eAbove Ground Method\u003c\/a\u003e\" in a chicken pen as some chickens will dig up your pot trying to get to the larvae and any worms that have found their way to the pots.\n\nIf you use the above ground method they can't dig around it but can easily access the larvae when they venture outside the pot.  (video coming)\n\n\u003ch2\u003eHow do I harvest the larvae for the chickens?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nIn your chicken pen, they will help themselves to the larvae.  When composting in your garden, simply put on a glove, scoop out some Larvae and toss it into your chicken pen.   Your chickens will sort out what to eat while the rest will improve the soil in their coop.  Or give the larvae a little hose with water through a strainer to remove all the composting material.\n\nThere will be other bugs in there that your chickens will also like.  Hose gently to save as many bugs as you can.  There might be little cockroaches, slaters, millipedes and other composting critters.  All good for your chickens and your garden though some might disagree about Millipedes.\n\nWhen the Soldier Fly larvae grow big enough and are ready to pupate they bury out through the soil and hatch into Soldier Flies.  Then they find a partner, mate, lay their larvae and die. Not much of a life for a fly.   Very rarely will you see them in your garden.  They are very elusive and completely harmless.  They don't have a mouth so they cannot harm you.   Get excited if you see one in your garden because you know you have the best composter around that is free - next to the worms of course.\n\nLink- Growing greens in your chicken pen on top of the Compot\n\n\u003ch2\u003eGrowing greens in your chicken pen\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nMany of you with chickens know you can't grow anything is a chicken pen because chickens will scratch everything to pieces.  Having a Compot and Compot Top allows you to grow greens in their coops without them destroying the seeds before they have sprouted.  When you are growing greens in the lid, remove the top after the greens have sprouted and let the chickens at it.\n\nAnother tip is to uncover the seeds when they have just sprouted. The seeds are really high in protein at this stage.  Let your wheat or barley etc grow long and green to improve your egg quality.\n\nHyperlink - \"details on how to grow wheatgrass, barley, oats etc\"\n\n\u003ch2\u003eUsing the propagator top directly in the garden\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nYou can use the Propagator Top directly in the garden to cover small seedlings.   This is really handy for plants that don't like to be transplanted.   You can plant them once straight into a garden and protect them with the Compot Top.   Water them through the holes in the top and uncover when ready.  Secure them in place with the 4 stakes that come with your Top.   This stops the Top from being knocked over by garden animals protecting your plant till it's time to uncover it.\n\nFind out what works best for you. Some people might use those jiffy packs or egg cartons.  Or just fill the lid with potting mix and plant directly in the lid.   This works well for wheatgrass.\n\nIf using compost from inside the Compot be careful when propagating because it can be too rich.  It is best to mix it with other soil, but again experiment and see what works best for what you are growing.  There are so many a little research on the net.   I have had great success with everything I have grown so far but naturally, I've not tried everything there is to grow.  And what works in my area may not work in your area so just keep experimenting and having some fun.\n\nHaving the three Portable Composter Propagator Tops gives you more opportunity to experiment more and hence get better results.   If you are growing wheatgrass you should never run out of wheatgrass because you will have enough tops to overlap the growing time.  Definitely better if you are more than one person who loves wheatgrass juice each day as a nutrient booster.\n\nAlternately if you have chickens you can put one in your chicken pen and two in your garden to nourish and improve your soil while feeding your chickens at the same time.   Or you can have two for your chickens and one for you.  It’s up to you.  There is no right way or wrong way.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eUsing the Top directly in the garden\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nYou don't necessarily need to use the propagator on top of the eco-eze Compot composter all the time.  Plant them around your garden over new seedlings to protect your seedling from slugs and bugs that would normally harm your plants.  This is common when you have plants that don't like being propagated in little pots and then transplanted into the ground.  You have to plant them directly in the ground, cover them with the Top, and not move them.\n\nThis is where the Top really comes in handy as there are not too many things on the market that aren't high enough to accommodate a growing plant.   Plus it is harder to knock over if you are using the stakes to hold it in place.   And it is easy to water your plants through the holes in the top where the gases escape a better result all over your garden and less need to move them.  But of course, it is your decision if you want to move them and dig more holes.  To me this is work and if you have bad clay soil this place the lid (with the soil and seeds) on top of the Compot but \u003cstrong\u003eDO NOT\u003c\/strong\u003e lock it.  Place the Propagator top on top of the lid, and with a little downward pressure, twist it clockwise and lock it into place.  The gases escape through the top where you can also water it through the same holes.  The heat generated from the composting waste below creates just enough heat to keep the seeds warm.    Not only that it creates a nice humid environment in the top, much like a glass house or terrarium.\n\nAnd you can water the seeds through the hole in the top of the Top where the gases also escape.  It is fun to see your seed sprout and grow under the Propagator Top\n\n\u003ch2\u003ePropagate directly in the garden\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nPlant Propagation Top can also be used directly in the garden over any new seedling or plant.  Place it over the plant or seed and secure it in place with the 4 stakes through the holes in the side tabs.  This protects the plant from the elements and garden critters till it is big enough to be left uncovered.  Water the plant through the holes in the top so you don't have to remove the top every time you want to water.\n\nThe new Top has the holes arranged so you can water directly onto your seeds when using toilet rolls to propagate.  Remove the cover when the seedling is big enough to fend for itself and harden it off to the sun.  Hardening off is necessary as there is a small amount of UV protection in the material to protect your seedling.  The UV also ensures the top will last for many years in the sun before ending up in your recycle bin.\n\nYou can purchase seeds to add to an order of pots and tops on our seed site \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/abseeds.compot.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"\u003eABSeeds\u003c\/a\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eUse in your chicken pen\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nYou can even use it in your chicken pen over the Compot for growing wheat, barley or oats.  Or use it directly on top of a big pot plant so the chickens don’t destroy whatever it is you are trying to grow.\n\nWith the above ground method you can dispose of some chicken waste as well.  (video coming soon)   The lift pin allows for easy removal of the lid to fill more waste into the Compot below.  Whatever you do will depends on what you want to achieve in your garden, and thus determines whether this is a valuable addition to your Compots.\n\nI love mine for growing wheat grass in record time ready to juice and for having fun propagating seeds when I have time.    Propagating in Summer can be hard in extreme climates so try doing it in the shade or semi-shade.  You can usually propagate in the sun or shade in winter depending on what you are trying to grow.\n\nKeep experimenting and just have fun with it. This way you won't be putting your trowel into semi-decomposed doggie doos which could be really stinky.\n\nDepending on what sort of soil you have will depend on how long they need to rest. If you have really bad clay soil it can take longer whereas sandy soil is quicker as the contents leach away quicker. Of course, you don't need to empty them until they have filled up with soil which can take up to a year or more depending on your garden and how you rotate filling them. Once it is too full to put anymore waste in then you can let one rest to fully decompose, and then empty it.\n\nThe Black Recycled Compots are very slightly softer \u0026amp; weaker than the Green Compots.  The little tabs on the lid can potentially  break if you stand on them. I personally recommend getting the green ones if you are likely to put them in a place in the garden where people are likely to step. as they will last longer, can be recycled more times, and don't break if you stand on them. The new material makes them very similar in strength.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eCan the \u003cstrong\u003eRecycled Easy Compost Bins be recycled?\u003c\/strong\u003e\n\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nThey can be recycled once they start to fall apart but they can only be recycled a certain number of times as they get softer each time and eventually become unusable.  With care they could last up to ten years or more.    Some people believe recycled plastic is the better way to go.  And in many instances it is.  But with the Compot recycled is not always the best option as they could potentially break.  And if the material is not clean but instead \"Kerbside Waste\" then it could potentially leach chemicals into the soil.  However the current material beings used should not leach chemicals into the soil.\n\nIf you are using them in a raised garden bed and not likely to stand or sit on them, then the recycled pots are the way to go.   It is a personal choice and up to you in the end.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eHow many do I need?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nAs a general rule of thumb, I suggest one Compot per person and one for the garden.   Add one or two more if you have pets depending on whether you have a small or large animal and a small or large amount of animal waste.\n\nAdd an extra one per person if you are vegetarian.  Because, even though your waste will disappear in one to two weeks if it is full of vegan waste, I have found that vegetarians eat twice as much food as non-vegetarians so they need more space.   And they also eat less processed food, so again need more space.\n\nI always say to start with a minimum amount and see how you go.  Then get more if you need more.  And if you use the \u003ca href=\"\/pages\/super-fast-composting-above-ground-with-a-compot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"\u003e\"Above Ground Method\"\u003c\/a\u003e to compost some of your waste, you will find you may not need more, as the above ground method is super fast and works like having two in the garden so you get twice the space with just one pot.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eHow long should I let dog waste rest before using?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nIt is preferable to let the animal waste decomposed properly before you spread it around your garden.   This means letting one sit unattended for 4 to 6 weeks. It gives them more variety of food to eat but is not necessary if you don't want to do this. Because you have added your doggie doo to the mix, it will keep most dogs away as they don't usually like the smell of their own poop.  But this will not work if your dog eats his own poop.  There is really no right or wrong way to do it, just some ways work better.\n\nA little experimentation with different ways to do it will help you work out how you like to do it and what works best in your garden. Otherwise, just keep topping them up and let them look after themselves. And if you have bad soil worms will take the shredded bamboo deep down into the soil at the base of you pot. Thus improving your soil as time goes by.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eWhat is a good ground cover?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nA good ground cover is leaves, shredded bamboo, and grass clippings if you have any. Otherwise hay, straw, light mulches, pea straw, lucern mulch or anything except dirt and sugar cane mulch. Grass clippings are my favorite because they are the cheapest and provide a great cover for your soil. Just spread the covering all around your garden a couple of inches thick. Not too thick because you want it to break down quickly and not burn any of your plants. Put irrigation pipe below the grass clipping to prevent evaporation and help keep the grass clipping moist for the worms. This also counters the issue of grass matting together and becoming hydrophobic. It will turn into beautiful soil directly on your garden bed with out any hard work involved. When growing wheat grass all you need do is fill the lid with soil, water it well, then lay your seeds on top of the soil. Place your lid on top of a Compot. Do not lock the lid into place or the top will not lock into place. Them simply cover and lock on the Propagator Top and you are good to go.\n\n2. If growing individual seeds, I put toilet rolls in the Lid. Pack around them with soil, fill them up with soil (with a funnel if you have a big one), water well, then plant your seeds. Place some soil in an old strainer and shake some \"fines\" over the top of your seeds. This makes it easy for the sprouts to push through the topsoil. Then give then another gently water.  They are now ready to put on top of your Compot.\n\n\u003ch2\u003eHow can you water them gently?\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nIf you have one of those spray bottles you can give them a gently spray. I took a sewing pin, heated it up on a flame and poked it through the lid of a soft drink bottle or any bottle with a plastic lid. The holes are tiny so when you water the little seeds you get a really super gentle spray that won't knock your seeds out of their holes. Now you are ready to put the lid on top of your Compot to lock on the propagator top.\n\nRemember to check the soil is damp each day till you know how often you need to water or how often you don't need to water. Covering you seeds with the Compot Top also stops little mice from eating your seeds before they even get a chance to sprout.\n\nThere are lots of other things you can use for sprouting your seeds. I prefer the toilet rolls because long roots have somewhere to grow. Then you gently lift out the toilet roll and plant it in the ground with the new seedling that has sprouted. As long are you keep your soil moist, the worms will eat the toilet roll. And lets face it - you never run out of toilet rolls. They are like coat hangers - they breed. lol\n\n\u003ch2\u003eCleaning the Lid\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\nGive the lid a good wash in hot water before you start a new set of seeds. If you are concerned with transferring bugs or disease to a new batch of seeds, then clean with vinegar or a weak bleach solution.\n\nI keep a container of old vinegar for this purpose and sometimes soak the lids in the vinegar overnight. There are other things you could use such as bleach, Pino clean, or any disinfectant. But I would not use any of these unless you have a serious problem with a particular disease that might be difficult to eradicate.
