BURDOCK – WATANABE (GOBO)
Arctium lappa
Watanabe produces sweet edible roots to 80 cm long. It matures earlier than the Takinogawa. A stout & handsome plant with large, wavy leaves & round unusual purple flower heads. It is an excellent source of B Vitamins & minerals. [Note to market growers: The root is sold in Asian markets with dirt still on it because if washed the attached greens wilt quickly. Great in stir-fry & soups. Burdock grows well in moist, well-drained soil in full sun. Harvest the roots when they are 30 cm or longer.
Keep weeded & thin to about 10 cm (4 in) apart. The plant prefers regular watering. The reason for keeping the plants so close together is that it makes the roots grow long & thin which is desirable. Spring through to Summer. Do not like being planted with anything else, total loners.
