LEEK – VARNA
Allium porrum
Varna is a tall, slender, bunching leek with light green leaves. It is unusually fast-growing & tends to produce a clump, rather than a single stem. A delicious alternative to spring onions; use either raw in salads or lightly steamed. Hardy & pest resistant; well suited to warmer areas and will grow even in far north Qld. The highly uniform, flavourful leeks are very cylindrical & quite thick. The leaves are upright & rigid, with good tolerance to leaf diseases. Varna is named after a town (& region) in Bulgaria. Bulgarian type leeks are bred for size & flavour, and Varna lives up to both.
An excellent contribution to the vegetable garden.
