PEA – PIGEON (small)
Cajanus Cajun
Pigeon Peas have been cultivated for 3500 years & may have come to the West Indies with the slave Indian workers around the mid 1800′s You can use the green peas like fresh peas, & the dried peas like any other dried peas, beans or lentils. (In India Dhal is made from pigeon peas.) The peas can also be sprouted & they can be ground into flour. Pigeon pea would have to be one of the most versatile plants because it improves soil fertility by fixing atmospheric nitrogen. It is a perennial, evergreen shrub, growing to over 3m tall &has a lifespan of about 5 years, tolerates various soil types.
