TURNIP – HINONA KABU (aka WU JING)
TURNIP – HINONA KABU (aka WU JING) are popularly known for making Sakurazuke, or the cherry blossom pickle, because of their colour. This traditional Japanese vegetable originated in the 1470s. The name places the origin of the brightly-hued turnip in the town of Hino, in Shiga prefecture. AKA Turnip of the Sun or Long turnip. In Japan, Hinona Kabu turnips are known as simply Kabu, in Chinese as Wu Jing or Manjing and in Cantonese as Mo thing. The average size is about 3.8cm in diameter & it can grow up to 35cm in length, although most roots are shorter than this. Bright white in colour with a vibrant purple-red coloured shoulder. They are excellent for cooking or eating raw, they boast a mild spicy & sweet flavour. Their green tops are also entirely edible.
Plant seeds outdoors where they are to grow, cover seeds with fine soil. When young seedlings are 5 – 10cm tall, thin to 10 to 15cm apart. Avoid using fresh manure in a soil where you plant turnips. Plants produce best in light, well-drained soil.
