compot-and-propagator-x-2-5l-compost-bin
Compot & Propagator x 2 | 5L Compost Bin
Under normal circumstances, your wheat will grow in less than 10 days. This is quicker than planting wheat directly on the ground. But you can plant your wheat directly on the ground if you want to, and still cover it with the Compot Top. Hold it in place with the 4 Stakes. It won't grow as quickly directly on the ground, because it does not have the heat and moisture created from composting below in a Compot.

You should have a wheat crop to cut and juice every week if you time it right. Customers have told me it grows quicker than in their wheatgrass trays. The heat generated below in the Compot makes it just the right environment for the wheat, barley, or oats, to sprout.

The Compot Top comes with a lift pin as well. This can be placed in any one of the four holes in the new design (center hole in the old design) and left there while you are propagating. When your wheatgrass gets really tall the lift pin makes it easy to pick the lid up and put in more compost below. If you have several Compots then you might like to just leave one to propagate with and rotate filling up the others. This is what works best for me. Work out a system that works for you.

How much juice can I get out of one lid?

A whole lid full of wheatgrass will give you 5 to 7 shots of wheatgrass if you blend it up with roughly 100mls of water. This comes from only half a cup of wheat seeds. Enough for one shot per day for a week. And you don't need a special juicer to turn it into juice. But get your seeds from an organic shop if you can. Or grow the wheat till it seeds and save the seeds.

My trick, (that I discovered by accident) to stop the bitterness when juicing wheat grass, is to freeze it into ice cube trays or small plastic containers. Defrost the next day for your daily shot, and it actually becomes quite drinkable. All the bitter taste is gone. Or add to a smoothie or whatever takes your fancy.

One for you, One for your chooks

If you have two Compots and Tops you can put one of the pots and tops in your chicken pen and one in your veggie garden. But it's up to you where you put them. There is no rule. Just whatever suits you and your garden.

I have found that in hot climates it is best to propagate under a shady tree though it does depend on what you are trying to grow. Having the extra propagator top means you can use it directly in the garden to cover any new plant. Some plants don’t like being transplanted so cover them with the propagator top directly in the garden. Stake the top into the ground with the 4 stakes, to prevent bugs and slugs from eating your new little plants. Water it through the holes in the top while gases escape through the holes as well. Experiment what works best for you.

Try growing other things from seed as well. It is not just for wheatgrass. There are a number of ways you can use the lid to grow the seeds. I like using toilet rolls. Some people might use those jiffy packs or egg cartons. Or just fill the lid with potting mix and plant directly in the lid. This works well for wheatgrass.

If using compost from inside the Compot be careful when propagating because it can be too rich. It is best to mix it with other soil, but again experiment and see what works best for what you are growing. There are so many variables, but I am sure you will work that our for yourself over time.

Articles coming soon

What can I put in my Compots with my dog waste (coming soon)

What if my dogs want to dig it up (coming soon)

Black Soldier Flies and Animal Waste (coming soon)

Composting in winter

Propagating wheatgrass

propagating seeds

Shop eco-eze Compots Now
