BEETROOT-MANGEL WURZEL mentioned in the 1927 Henry Fields catalog which said, "Giant, smooth, long roots of cylindrical shape, weighing up to 9 pounds each & growing two-thirds above ground. Solid white flesh with high food value". These big yellow-skinned roots are perfect for growing. Plant in early spring or autumn. This cool-weather crop does best when soil temperatures have reached 10 - 20C & daytime temps hover around 20 to 25C. Depending on the variety, you need anywhere from 70 to 100 days to reach maturity. If the weather is dry, soak the seeds overnight before planting to promote good germination. These giant root vegetables need at least 30cm of loose, well-draining soil to thrive. If your soil is heavy, work in mature compost using a garden spade to lighten it.
