BROCCOLI-CHINESE GAILAN is a most unusual vegetable, for, although the glossy blue-green young leaves & buds are also eaten, it’s grown for its very thick, juicy stems which are delicious when cooked. The top few cms of the flowering stalks are picked as soon as the flowers (white in this variety) appear, which can be as little as 2 months after sowing. Easy to grow, the seed can be sown from early spring to late autumn. Transplant or thin out to 20 to 25cm apart. Adapts well to cold & hot climates & can be grown all year round. After the first cutting of the main stem, the plant will grow many branches for subsequent harvests. Very similar to Broccolini. Choose a sunny, well-drained position & sow directly where they are to grow. Cover lightly, firm down and keep moist.

When I started this journey in 2009, I found nothing existed commercially, that was reasonably priced and easy to use. There was a homemade system which I also found was not that user-friendly.
