FLOWER-SCHIZANTHUS-ANGEL WINGS or Poor Mans Orchid is rewarding to grow. It is a colorful orchid-like flower mix which stands above the attractive fern-like foliage. It’s an annual that is heavy blooming with dainty flowers that come in a variety of multi-marked colors of pink, red, lavender, rose, & bi-color, each with golden centers. These flowers are ideal for mass planting, lots of colors in the flower border or in containers. They are showy & exotic looking adding lots of beauty wherever they are grown. Schizanthus is also, commonly called Poor Man’s Orchid. Native to Chile, well suited to pot culture for early spring flowering, very adaptable, nip buds to spread the plant, thrives in semi-shade,
Surface sow onto a good soil medium. Seeds can be started indoors twelve weeks before your last frost date. Do not cover the seeds with soil but cover the tray with black plastic or keep it in a dark location until the seeds germinate. Keep the temperature within the growing medium at 15 – 21°C. Plant the seedlings in the garden, in rich, well-draining soil when all danger of frost has passed.

When I started this journey in 2009, I found nothing existed commercially, that was reasonably priced and easy to use. There was a homemade system which I also found was not that user-friendly.
Then a friend of mine told me about a homemade method she used. However, when I tried her method, I found this also didn’t suit my needs, as it too had flaws that I considered where important. It did not keep vermin out, did not have a lockable lid and (to me) looked unsightly in the garden
